The Nalini Chidambaram episode

This episode is all over the media and TVR Shenoy shares his views on the same. The last para says it all.

P. Chidambaram may not have known that his wife had been hired by the CBDT, but there is no way that Nalini Chidambaram did not know that her husband happens to be the Union finance minister! That means there are some questions which need to be answered.

The issue was not whether P. Chidambaram was kept in the loop. His honesty was never in doubt (others may disagree.) The issue was that of a potential conflict of interest. I wonder which genius had the brainwave of getting Nalini Chidambaram to represent the CBDT?

Don’t treat it as a storm in a teacup. The reaction appears overblown today because of P. Chidambaram’s personal integrity. Would we take charges of nepotism equally lightly had it involved one of his other, more colourful, colleagues?

  • Whilst reading the article I couldn't understand why CBDT apologised to P.Chidambaram for not consulting him, I thought it was preposterous to expect the husband to be consulted before appointing the wife. But once I googled and found out who/what CBDT was, the error of judgement on CBDT's part and on Nalini Chidambaram's part is clear!

Found the 'laloo principle' bit funny in the article, but so true though. Nepotism at its best, Cherie has a lot of catching up to do still.

  • Uma,
PC or his wife Nalini can't claim that they were unaware of the implications. PC's impeccable record might get tarnished by such incidents.

  • It is immaterial whether PC has a good record or not.

The explanations being given are too ridiculous to be believed. Even if the CBDT Chief was trying to be on the right side of his Boss, there was no reason for PC's wife to accept the assignment and spoil his party for some piddly remuneration. If she is so hot as a Counsel she could have got a hundred other assignements from private parties.

  • BR,
I also feel that the explanation from the CBDT and the government doesn't seem to be realistic.

  • This is trying to make a mountain out of a mole hill. Mrs. Chidambaram by her own could get enough clients and there is no need for anyone's help. This issue is blown out of propotion because the person involved is of impeccable integrity. Contrast this with Jaya and Sushma who are shouting from rooftops over this issue.
