Chennai’s new Crown Jewel

Chennai has an answer to Bangalore’s EBONY on the 13th Floor. Having been to EBONY restaurant a few times, I was quite impressed since they had a distinct menu which included even Parsi cuisine. Chennai had a revolving restaurant by name Carnival Heights but I guess it was not as impressive as it should be.

Dine with a view

The ambitious Appaswamy group has started a new restaurant called “The Crown” inside Hotel Residency Towers. CROWN will be located on the 20th floor and will have indoor and outdoor dining areas. What better way to catch a glimpse of the bustling Chennai landscape? The closest I have got to getting a good view of Chennai is from Mathura Restaurant in C&Y Towers, Mount Road. Hoping that “The Crown” will be a permanent fixture in the Chennai skyline (Do I hear somebody saying that Chennai doesn’t have a skyline).

  • I guess Residency Towers in Thiagaraya Road (Pondy Bazaar) is the tallest building in Chennai. There is a Hilton Hotel coming up in Teynampet (near SUN TV) which is also quite tall.

  • Kaps, I had an idea for a "floating restaurent" a long time back. The entire restaurent will be on "islands within an ocean" concept which means circular stands will be tables surrounded by water and accessible to a main concourse thru a two-person width path. Depth will be only 1.5 feet considering that children will also be coming there. Lighting will be the kind of lighting that ships have on their decks and there will be a "lighthouse" in the center of the restaurent with a revolving light covering all the areas in a 360 degree sweep. Idea irukku, panam enge :-)

  • @Thennavan,

Your concept sounds interesting. Not sure whether Chennai can support such exotic ventures. Maybe you should think of starting this @ "The World" project in Dubai. These days ideas are scarce and capital is avlbl in plently. Go pursue your dreams, VC's will flock to your door.

    @Dreamvendor,
I haven't been to The Crown as yet, but will make it a point to visit the same during my next trip to Chennai. If you plan to go there in the near future, do lemme know ur feedback.

  • Hi...
I dont think the the building next to Sun TV on Mount Road is a Hilton Property. IIRC, it was supposed to be a Hotel jointly developed by Oberoi and the Balaji Group, but the project was never completed...it's an eyesore the way it is currently, just standing there half-completed.

  • Hi Dynesh,

Thanx for pointing out the error. Thanks for dropping by. I too agree that it is an eyesore. Hope they do something about it.

  • I m sorry but this article seems rubbish.. Why do u want to join the race of "teh most beautiful sky line"
    for reasons:
    1. Chennai jus cant compete with cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Bangalore which are in the list of 'soon to become world class cities'
2.Skyline is not something which decides how good the city is. people's behaviour, cleanliness and transport facilities matter more..

thers one tthing no one can deny..that b'coz self serving and reckless politicians of chennai, Bang and Hyd have overtaken Chennai as better metros..

Well i hrd someone askin whether chennai has a skyline... here is the answer.. IT DOESNT...ATLEAST NOTHIN COMPARED TO MUMBAI...

PS: I stay in Mumbai and study in IIT Madras.. and despite of being a tam myself i find it difficult to say that chennai is better than others.. except in cleanliness..

  • For those who find it hard to believe..
    http://www.emporis.com/en/bu/sk/st/ma/ct/co/ci/?id=100060

Mumbai has 623 high rises while Chennai with 26.. barely finds a place in the top ten..
Who was talkin abt a skyline.. with the tallest building in chennai at 46m tall.. less than one third the tallest in Mumbai WTC.. at 156m... with the soon to come up Park Hyatt tower at 310m..
