Have you done your Marketing?

Few days ago, I had a conversation with a colleague during lunchtime. I asked him as to what he does in the evenings. He said that he does Marketing. I thought he must be into some Amway, Herbalife kind of MLM and wanted to find out more about the same. (I thought this might be a way to make some money!!). I started probing further and he said that by Marketing he was referring to shopping in a Supermarket. I didn’t know what to say. This is not the first time I have heard people getting confused between Marketing and Shopping.

My uncle used to work in a PSU in Bangalore and since their quarters was located outside the city their company arranged “Marketing Trips” to Jayanagar so that people can go and shop.

Is Philip Kotler listening?

How weird can it get?

Note: The idea of this post is not to poke fun at anybody in particular.

How often have to come across a weird spelling for the word WEIRD? Weird should go down as one of the most mis-spelt word’s in the Blogosphere & also in the English language. On an average one out of every three such words have been mis-spelt. Some of these could be typos. If it continues at this pace, I might forget the real spelling and use “WIERD” instead.

  • Yeah you are right and thats the hard truth of blogogpshere. It is this informal SMS culture that hasmade the blogosphere thrive all these years.

Just like any other medium, I believe blogosphere will continue to churn out mediocre, badly spelt blogs until it slowly cleanses its sins.

    Quibbling is a crime too;-)

  • But then it takes someone like Homer Simpson to confuse it with 'Wired. For your reading pleasure...

% Lisa sits on the couch reading the magazine "Wired" when Homer comes in and
% takes it from her, thinking it is the magazine "Weird".

Homer: Heh-heh-heh. I love their hilarious send-ups of hit movies.
    Lisa: Dad, it's not--
Homer: "Gigabyte"! [laughs] They've done it again. Gigabyte. Wait, this
isn't "Weird"! [looks at cover] Why, there's no magazine *called*
    "Weird", is there?
Lisa: [takes magazine] This is *"Wired"*. It's about computers and
    technology.
    [Homer stares]

  • You are right! I often get confused with the spelling of "WEIRD" but end up looking at the dictionary or something else to correct it...

I have a question here.Do we have to be really perfect to enter blogosphere? It is not just the correctness of language part of the blog but aren't we making it personal by having a touch of our mother tongue in most of the blogs? does that make our blog mediocre?

  • Thats probably how words evolve! Rules of language change to suit the popular notion. Like the spelling of colour to color. Mostly in America, the rules are relaxed and then slowly these things find place in the dictionary!

  • Read this story about the word personnel.
The assistant Vice-President of Personnel notices that his superior, the VP himself, upon arriving at his desk in the morning opens a small, locked box, smiles, and locks it back again. Some years later when he advanced to that position (inheriting the key), he came to work early one morning to be assured of privacy. Expectantly, he opened the box. In it was a single piece of paper which said: "Two Ns, one L."

  • IBH, If that question was/wan't for me. I take it. I was only trying to say that Blogosphere thrives on this personal voice so no nitpicking on the grammar/spell stuff.

BTW, There are tons of errors in my blog too. I have taken care to correct them but I have to say you cannot come out with a great blogpost until its spontaneous. I believe grammar/spell checks are good to have for a blogpost but not necessary.

    Here's the punch ;-)

No Blog is mediocre until it has a personal voice to it. The minute it begins to just point to news articles it ceases to be a blog. Hows that baby!!

  • LG,

not to offend u sir...nor to nitpick....defly u are grand master of blogs...It was just a personal take on what was written...I have always had this concern...coz personally am not well versed or can u say not having that so called command over language.I have never given heed to writing..but this blogosphere attracted me to write...so my question was just an innocent question to convince myself that my blogs are OK in its level of comparison to others...

so LG, thanks for looking in to this..have been silent admirer of ur blogs :) u keep it rolling baby! :)
