Living Life KINGFISHER Size

Launch of India’s second (BIG?) Budget Airline

India’s Richard Branson, Vijay Mallya has launched the country’s second budget airline on his son’s birthday. Vijay Mallya is a person who likes to live life “Kingfisher” size. He has dabbled in politics, business, aviation. He was one of the very few Indian corporate honchos to own a private jet (Gulfstream). Going by what is on offer at Kingfisher Airlines, I don’t feel that it can be classified as a budget airline. He plans to provide in-flight entertainment in every seat. He plans to employ former models as flight stewardess. He even plans to get celebrities like Yana Gupta on air to give an out of the world experience to his customers. Only the prices conform to the norms of the Budget Airlines. Most of his plans seem to be outlandish and I don’t know how he can keep costs low inspite of all these frills. Going by what he says this might not just be a launch gimmick, it is more of a permanent feature. Let’s hope they don’t go the way of Modiluft and NEPC Airlines.

  • My previous blog on the airline launch. Trust me: the features are common and budget-like.

  • I'm with Yardboy on this. Jet Blue is kicking every other airline's butt (exceot Southwest's) in the US market. Leather seats, entertainment console, new planes and mostly non-stop flights at throw-away prices ($99 one-way from Silicon Valley to New York - 6 hour non-stop flight). And they are the second most profitable US airline. The supposedly full-service ones are teetering on the verge of bankruptcy.

I haven't had the opportunity to fly them yet, but my friend swears by them. And their fleet is brand new Airbus A-320s.

  • Kingfisher is one of the few Indian brands which are globally well-known. They have done something new, which most of the other Indian flights haven’t done so far. Now, that's a good sign. I can only comment about their service only when I fly 'em.

P.S Did you know that Sambar is not an original Tamilian dish?

  • Mallya does the launch in his inimitable style ! Make sense for him to brand kingfisher in between budget and full-service airlines .I don't think Kingfisher should be called "budget" . The prices definitely do not suggest so.

  • Kingfisher into competition is really good. But whats more good is that Jet Airways has realized the importance of Budget air, and the Check-fares in Jet Airways is simply good, and really cheap for the Quality Service from them.

In India, Jet Airways cant be bet,.
