Indian design firm wins BusinessWeek design award
Satish Gokhale of Design Directions has won the Bronze award in the Consumer Products category of the Annual Design Awards conducted by BusinessWeek magazine. It is quite sorry to note that the Indian media has failed to project these kind of firms. Why do we have to learn about such outstanding firms only after the international media showcases them? I hadn’t heard about this firm before and I’m sure it would be the same case with most of you (unless you are part of the design industry in India).
Design Directions has designed a disposable biodegradable slippers which is priced at Rs. 22 / pair. The product looks quite ethnic and cool. With this kind of pricing I think it can make an international impact. Other prominent products, which have won the award, include the iPOD Shuffle, Korean MP3 product iRiver and Motorola Razr V3.

If they target higher income category people and big hotel chains, these cool disposable slippers will move like anything. They cannot target lower income category, because of availability of longlife plastic/rubber slippers in downtowns.
Foreign media always look for some unique products. Our Media normally give importance to overseas news / products or local politics news. So, they miss out these type of innovative ideas.

irrelevant but slightly related, I just bought myself 50 rupees wala Poona slippers (the famous Osho slippers) and have been using them with gay abandon through the Bombay rains! so yo for this design :)

The strangest part of it all is that there is such creativity, thought, effort and not to mention trials that go before design is created. And yet, design lets so little bhav in India.

Kaps, this is really a good price.. we can bring in a lot of articles with high creativity and low price.. The high price things make me think, the world is just out of reach, even if you earn enough,,

@Monu,
I guess there is nothing u cannot get in T Nagar / Pondy bazaar. But the traffic there is big deterrent for shoppers.
@IOIIO,
Rs. 22 is quite cheap even by Indian standards. I hope they market it properly.
@Ram,
Your are bang on about the Indian media. They seem to be crazy about latest technology, iPOD's, cars etc. There are lot of people who are artistically inclined and given the low price they will support such products.
@Vatsan,
I have read about Michael Foley. These guys need more encouragement.
@Charu,
I haven't heard about Osho slippers....what does it look like?
@Anshul,
I agree with u.
@30in2005,
Thanks for dropping by and glad 2 know that u cooked Sambhar.
@IBH,
iPOD Shuffle is a poor man's iPOD as it a stripped down version. I can listen to songs in a random order. i prefer to select the songs depending on the mood and hence iPOD Shuffle is a strict no no for me. I have a Creative Zen Touch 20 GB.
@Keerthi,
Will take a look at the video soon.

osho slippers are basic flats sold near the osho ashram in Pune - I haven't seen them anywhere else - they look very vaguely like these slippers here on your post :)
