The Most Hated Subject

No prizes for guessing the answer. It is none other than Maths.

In an AP-AOL News poll as students head back to school, almost four in 10 adults surveyed said they hated math in school, a widespread disdain that complicates efforts today to catch up with Asian and European students. Twice as many people said they hated math as said that about any other subject.

Recent studies have suggested 15-year-olds in the United States lag behind those of the same age in Europe and Asia in math. Young people in many countries are stronger in the important subject of science, as well. Both subjects are critical in research, innovation and economic competitiveness.

  • Monu,

I guess most Asians (Indians & Chinese) don't have much of a problem with Maths. But the obsession with centums is what amazes me.

  • I think in India too students find maths relatively more difficult. In the 10th exams, students' average score is usually less in maths (& english).

I would say that the problem actually lies with math teachers. Most of our school math teachers do not appreciate the subject themselves. How can they inspire the students in that case? They therefore settle for mechanical problem solving that looks more like magic to the students.

  • Anand,
On a comparitive basis, Indians score better than westerners in Maths I agree with the fact that some of our teachers resort to mechanical problem solving. Further our feel that our methodology is more focussed on getting the right answer rather than following the right approach.

  • Amazing, not really. But I am the odd one out I guess. My favorite subject followed closely by English :-)

    I hated doing anything else.

I also liked Maths. Guess we belong to the Minority.

  • LOL! They hate maths. Good news for us... we win by sheer numbers, if not by percentage.. ;)
