How to ask for a hotel upgrade?
This may not work everytime, but worth a try. I hope they cover airline upgrade in their future posts.

Kaps, airline upgrades are totally out of our hands. If there are just 10 people in a 40 seater domestic flight, you might get a biz-class upgrade for a paltry 15-20 dollars extra.
If you get the feeling your flight might be overbooked, be the last one in the line. There are 2 possibilities, either you get into a cramped seat/if your seat has been given to someone or your seat is broken, then you might be lucky enough to travel in biz-class :)
I was'nt so lucky enough, my lucky ass friend happened to get a biz-class upgrade like this couple of times.

Or you may even be luckier when you stand up for a (almost) fully booked flight.
I got it once when I skipped my early morning flight.

@Vidya,
It is normally very difficult to get one...unless u r a frequent flyer! It usually happens if the Economy class is over booked and Business / First Class is empty
@Narayanan,
Some of my friends have got free upgrade if the economy is over booked....but one needs to be lucky
@Daz,
very true.
