Kollywood's Mr. Unbearable

Claim to fame – Pioneered new breed of ‘Sleaze Quotient’ in Kollywood

Biggest con job – getting A R Rahman to compose for him

USP – Getting involved in controversies

Use mute button – If he raises his voice to high pitch

Favourite colours – Blue and Pink

New Indian Express interviewed the irritating SJ Suryah in its Sunday edition. Here are some excerpts:

This man insists he isn’t going to budge until he becomes superstar Rajinikant, super-producer AM Ratnam, and super-director Mani Ratnam all rolled into one. And if you don’t like it, lump it.

Now all he needed was AR Rahman, the best music director in the country. Suryah met the composer on a return flight from Mumbai. Plonking himself into the seat vacant next to Rahman, Suryah told the composer he wanted to make a movie and wanted him to do the music. Rahman told him to come back with a screenplay and he would decide. Suryah said okay and, 15 seconds later, started narrating the screenplay of New. The flight landed after ninety minutes, and Suryah had Rahman. “Always aim for the stars,” says Suryah.

New was the first movie Suryah was going to star in. Everyone wondered (and still wonder) why he just didn’t get a top hero. “Why should I get someone else? I came to Kollywood to be an actor. Tell me one person who can direct, act, dance, write dialogues and fight as well as me. I challenge you.”

Suryah’s next starring movie A Aah (or Anbe Aaruyirae or Best Friend), which in all honesty is a good movie, about two people in love who break up and are brought together by their memories (a Suryah and actress Nila in a very unflattering electric blue), bombed at the box-office.

“Flop. Hit. All humbug,” says Suryah. "Hundred days, 175 days, 200 days, all lies. What a movie collects in the first four weeks after it is released is 90 percent of its collection. The rest is just enough for office expenditure, to send your clerk for coffee.

  • I saw Ah Aah. The tape was censored. But I it was fairly good.

    I guess it flopped due to the bad press? or maybe ppl just cant stand the actor?

  • >>Tell me one person who can >>direct, act, dance, write >>dialogues and fight as well as >>me. I challenge you.”

    Do I hear a chorus.. "T Rajendar".
    Kathai, thiraikathai, vasanam, isai, padalasriyay, direction all bundled into TR.
    Sj Surya is his reincarnation :)

  • Kaps,

    Going the actor way is only gonna mar his career... well, in case he is only gonna come out with crass movies like New and Aa Aah !

  • Suryah is disgusting! I was lured into watching Aa Aah because of the brilliant soundtrack but still couldn't stand it for more than 45 minutes. He can't act for nuts and dances like a constipated giraffe. His exaggerated body movements while speaking make me puke. I think he is still living under the illusion that he is a super-talented performer.Duh!!!!
    ( Though one should give him credit for a script like Vaali )

  • kaps,
    I think Surya is a certified nut.
    I always wondered that when surya was jus a director he gave two gud hits films vali and khushi. Now he has started acting and couldn't even make a gud film. ;D

  • AA's soundtrack was awesome... wonder how Rahman survived after seeing the visuals.. sigh!!

    We should remind SJ surayh about a man who all that and also does his own music, sings, makes his family act...he is the one and only T. Rajendar !!!

  • @J'adore,
    It didn't flop due to the bad press. People don't like SJS's mannerisms.

    @Narayanan,
    Ha Ha Ha. Has Gaiety been demolished now?

    @Veda,
    He thinks he is an allrounder....but he puts up a flop show in each of the departments.

    @Anon & Phoenix,
    TR and K Bhagyaraj come close. But none of them are active now...hence SJS feels that he is a unique breed

    @Somu,
    He can't continue with the double entendres anymore....people will shun it

    @Ravi,
    Even I watched Ah Aah just bcoz of the music...this is becoming a trap.

    @Nallavan,
    'Certified Nut' - gud one! It's better that he concentrates on the direction part

    @Chikuado,
    I don't think ARR has the time to looks at the visuals.....SJS might have survived bcoz of this.

    @Senthil,
    agree with u

  • I am not a big fan of Surya. I believe NEW was a hit because of FLESH..and it deserverd being banned.!

    I watched a little bit of a-aah..and couldn't stand some of the dialogues.!!

    Songs are good though.!

    By Blogger Narayanan Venkitu, at 4:11 PM

  • Why is he still acting! I heard he has a few more movies as an actor. Darn!

    By Blogger Ghost Particle, at 6:19 PM

  • @Venkitu Sir,
    Songs are the only saving grace for Ah Aah

    @GP,
    Good question. I believe he distributed the movie in Malaysia

    By Blogger Kaps, at 10:06 AM

  • As Suryah is claiming, it is true that distributors get back their investment or lose it, during the first few weeks itself... that's very evident from the recent day B.O. collections.
