Pointless Higher Degree?

B S Raghavan feels that Ph.D’s from Indian universities are losing sheen. I hope they bring in some regulation for awarding Ph.D's to celebrities as well. Otherwise you might end up seeing some politician's dog being nominated for the degree.

  • I agree that in general, our PhDs are lower in standard (due to various reasons). But how can BS Raghavan comment on whether a particular thesis is worthwhile just by looking at it's title? Does he have the expertise to judge all the thesises he looked into?

    And another debatable issue he did not mention there... how many Indians get PhDs outside of India? Looks like the cream just does not want to get PhDs in India in the first place. I know this is "chicken first or egg first" problem but if atleast a part of those people who study abroad decide to fight against bureacracy and corruption in the universities and still stay in India to get their degrees the scene could change dramatically.

  • Very soon, any Ph.D will not be worth the paper it's printed on. and definitely not worth the paper it wastes. What next, after a Ph.D?

  • my former roommate (who was from IIT-Bombay) told me this popular joke inside the campus : B.Tech is the main product of IIT,Masters is the by product and Ph.D is the waste product.

    Having said this, I am confident that Indian academecia will turn around with the new found confidence and booming economy .

  • @Chennai Chatter,
    First class prison should be a huge draw

    @Sham,
    I would believe that a significant chunk of the good ones would get Ph D outside India

    @Rajesh,
    It wasn't aimed at any single individual

    @Prerona,
    Thanks, will check it out

    @Venky,
    Yeah....maybe Vasoolraja MBBS.

    @TDU,
    Is there something after Ph D?

    @Cogito,

    In US they do a post-doc. No idea if it is a part in India. Most in te education field do their PhD almost 10 years into their teaching career and not really a requirement.

    The honorary degree is quite abused,but that does'nt quite mean the degree itself loses its value.
