Vikram Seth’s Two Lives off to a roaring start

Outlook says that Vikram Seth received an advance of Rs. 10 lakhs for 'Two Lives' and the book has sold 25,000 copies so far. Given that the book is priced at Rs. 695 (which is a bit high by Indian standards), one should say that the initial sales number is quite outstanding.

Most Indian publishers would've balked at the advance Penguin India paid for Vikram Seth's Two Lives: Rs 1 million. But with his band-baaja five-metro tour barely concluding, it is Penguin who is doing the smirking: the first print run of 25,000 copies is already sold out. There goes yet another publishing wisdom: there are no takers—or not enough—for pricey, literary hardbacks.

  • Big Boom for publishers this year! Two lives, Shalimar the Clown. Wonder whether they are *that* goood, or is it just clever marketing by bookstores. (Especially with Shalimar)

  • @Krithika,
    I guess ON@TCC will will be part of the list. I was reading somewhere that the initial print run is 50,000 copies.

    @Harish,
    I blogged about BMW's Chennai plant quite sometime ago.
