Making cents out of Adsense
I am not a big fan of Google Adsense. If there was real money to be made through Adsense, I would be chalking out strategies to do that rather than writing blog post after blog post. Most people who claim to have made big money out of Adsense actually make more money out of selling “Get Rich Quick Through Adsense” kind of books on Amazon. In some ways, Google Adsense can be equated to MLM. Lot of people want to make money out of both these schemes, but no one knows how to make money. Both these schemes hope that some bakra will come and click on the ad (in the case of adsense) or join the MLM network so that the person can get rich.
I usually watch such articles with scorn and it would be wrong to assume that everyone can make the kind of money mentioned here:
But Gandhi's Adsense profits have exceeded his wildest dreams. He now earns about $1,000 a month from the program, the same salary he previously earned as a software engineer. His new income has allowed him to leave his job and return to school. "Today I am able to sponsor my higher studies because of Adsense," he says.
Deepesh Agarwal, who runs a small cybercafe in Rajasthan state, India, draws about 90% of his income, or $1,500 a month, from his Adsense earnings. It is a princely sum in a state where the average income is just $300 a year.
"Adsense has changed my life," Mr. Agarwal says. "I can afford things that I was not able to before. I am planning to buy a new car. I can save for my future."
In the Indian context, Google Adsense is not really attractive to bloggers and blog readers. There are very few India specific (contextual) ads that tempt you to click. Further, most of the ads are by the NRI-Remittance services and matrimonial sites. Indian MSM sites (like The Hindu Online Edition) use Adsense extensively and they should be recovering some of their costs through the Adsense program. With the growth in the Indian blogosphere and the Indian online audience don’t be surprised if an India focussed ad service is launched soon.

India is a land of very enterprising people and good to know that they make earning out of schemes like adsense

The funny thing is Google adsense rules prohibit people from sharing their adsense earnings.
I wonder if such articles lead to disqualification of the people mentioned from the scheme..

gautam ghosh - they don't actually stop you sharing how much you earn any more. There was a change a year back now.
They do stop you sharing CTR and impressions but not totals. Times have changed.

@Smiley,
Some people are really smart. Sometimes, Adsense revenues comes at the cost of reader inconvenience bcoz of the plethora of ads scattered all thru the site.
@Gautam,
that's real money....thanks for sharing it with us.
@Darren,
Happy to have a celebrity blogger here. Thanks for clarifying on the change in Google's Adsense policy.

Sites which attract certain kinds of Adsense links seem to make more money. eg technology. Deepesh is running a site which allows freeware downloads http://www.freeware-alternative.uni.cc. Jayant is running one which is a forum for technically minded people. www.nibbleguru.com
Both these sites would be attracting visitors of all nationalities, from all over the world. Which I think is key to making money off Adsense.
Gautam, your blog has links to jobs (which makes sense give the content on your blog), so again I think that's where the dollars are coming from. Indian sites which give links to stock-related ads also make a good amount of money.
Perhaps these categories of advertisers pay more per click thru than say restaurants or MBA courses - which is the kind of stuff that shows up on my blog :)
In 3 months I have earned some $ 44.
So I would say general interest blogs which attract more of Indian/ NRI traffic will still earn small amts wonly. Of course Google is planning to push Adwords aggressively to businesses in India so that may change.
Lastly, an interesting statement on Nibbleguru's About me section: This site is run by a group of people on strictly "No Profit No Loss" basis. Presently we do not have ads on our site. If we decide to put ads on our site we will donate all money to charity.
Well 45,000 Rs a month is hardly non profit! The USA Today article states Jayant is using the cash to finance his studies. Well, he could be blowing it up at nightclubs and that would be fine -but he needs to change that 'About Us' statement asap!

@Princess,
Some of them have come forward to share their earnings.
@Rashmi,
your observation is right. people writing generic stuff about Indian current affairs, politics and sports might not make as much money as those having focussed blogs (especially those dealing with technology). Ad size, placement, visibility etc matter as much as the content on the site. As mentioned earlier, some of these ads cause inconvenience to the reader and the blogger has to take a call whether he/she needs to put the reader at an inconvenience in order to chase these earnings.
