Vaiko’s Volte-face

In a shocking move, MDMK’s Vaiko has decided to shift loyalties and join the ADMK alliance. Just a few days ago, after much speculation, Vaiko announced his decision to stay put in the DMK-led alliance. This would be a definite jolt to the DMK-led alliance, as it has always believed that having more parties in the alliance would help in the ultimate numbers game. MDMK had wanted parity of seats with PMK and was quite disappointed with the number of sets (and quality of seats) allotted by the MK. MDMK had asked for 25 seats and MK had announced yesterday that he could give only 22 seats. MDMK was also alleging that the DMK was allotting seats, which had very low chance of victory. MK had jokingly remarked that he doesn’t have the Akshaya Paaththiram to give in to all the needs of the alliance parties.

After a 45-minute meeting between the two, Jayalalithaa told reporters that all other matters like POTA issue were things of the past. (Vaiko was detained under POTA for over an year during her current regime).

"We are here on a positive note, on a positive matter and we will be making only positive statements," she said.

Vaiko said the AIADMK-led alliance would "sweep" the polls. "This is the finest hour in the political history of Tamil Nadu. The alliance is a formidable one".

It remains to be seen whether DMK can woo back Dalit Panthers from the ADMK-led alliance to restore some balance. From the beginning, DMK has been categorical that it doesn’t intend to form a coalition government if it is voted to power. Having set such an expectation, the DMK would definitely go ahead and retain adequate number of winnable seats under its control so that this can be of use at the time of government formation.

With Vaiko auctioning his party to the alliance, which offers the highest number of seats, he would definitely lose credibility. MK would have fully known that he runs the risk of losing MDMK from the coalition if the seat sharing was not acceptable to MDMK. So MK has himself to blame.

Something tells me that this is going to cost dear for MK. It’s Advantage Amma right now.

  • But Vaiko's credibility will come down.

Another important factor which I think may be the reason that MK has to let off Vaiko is that Vaiko can do more damage from within than without in the future of DMK, as he is generally considered by ordinary DMK men as the "rightful successor" to MK.

Minus MK, a majority of ordinary DMK men will vote for Vaiko than for Stalin. So in that sense, now their fantasy leader("karai padiyaatha karam") has lowered his respect.

  • Sure,Vaiko will lose his credibility by shifting stands in the elections.
"Race la yaaru mudhal la odarangangradhu mukkiyam illa.. yaaru jeyikaranga ngaradhu daan mukkiyam. :)"

How about voting for Vkant ?

  • I see it as a "one-stone, two-mangoes" ploy by Amma. Though Vaiko has been promised 35, Amma would ensure that he gets 35 weak seats - which the ADMK would anyway lose.

Vaiko's loss of credibility is sure to turn some voters away from him. But it has also split the opposition. Now, the ADMK has one less enemy to fight with, and it has anyway killed off one of the fiercest.

It is now upto D-MK to turn this to their advantage.

  • So..now POTA charges are going to be dropped against Vaiko? What happened to all the fiery calls he and his party workers made when he was sent to the jail. Vaiko is far worse shameless than Jaya, i lost the little respect i had for him.

  • Surya,
I too felt it very sad. Read this statement by him, only a few days ago...

  • raajk - i just cannot understand how we can fight against corruption by propping up a corrupt government, then why did he have to make statements about clean government?
Is this what is called removing the thorn by the thorn :-)

  • (Goundamani Style): "Vaiko, Vaiko nu oru Manastharu irundharu....Avara thaan theditu iruken..."

I know this is a tough blow for DMK. But again DMK can atleast keep the existing parties including the commies happy. Also now vaiko becomes an easy target for the DPA alliance wherever his party contests, thereby increasing the chances of DPA victory. I still wont put my bet on ADMK at this time.

Had vaiko taken this decision on Feb 18th the damage on his image would be lesser.

  • It will be interesting to watch the succession plan MK has (and for that matter, Vaiko too). After Karunakaran's DIC(K), Bala saheb green signal for Udhav, and Deve Gowda's secular drama.

  • as goundamani said arasiyalle idhellam sagajam than..

  • Vaiko surely is an Opportunist. First he tied up with JJ for a few extra seats. Then on election talks he is only attacking the Family business of DMK ( Understand SUN TV is a Business). I am sure Dayanadhi Maran is a better politician than Vaiko from what we can see. Simply Vaiko attacks by saying what 11 central ministers have done for Tamilnadu. But see what they have done for India !
