Sun TV plans to go pay in India
Sun TV’s book-building issue opened today. The stocks are being issued at a very high premium. It has come to light that Sun TV plans to turn into a pay channel in India and might charge Rs. 15 – 20 per household. I haven’t heard of any success stories of Tamil channels turning pay. Since the Sun Network owns cable distributor SCV, they might just be able to force the people to pay this price.

When Vijay TV turned pay, the cablewallas arm-twisted the channel into submission. But they would not have been able to achieve it without a strong political influence. Sun should be able to arm-twist anyone, though.

With the SCV at the verge of being taken over,it all depends upon Election results.

The Business standard article clearly mentions that part of Sun TV's success is attributable to their hold over the cable distribution in TV. Hence they would be confident of making money thru the pay TV model.

@Raajk,
I doubt whether the State government has jurisdiction over a central subject like Cable Tv distribution. I think Amma's attempt to take over Sun TV would fail (this is irrespective of who comes to power).

@Villain,
I think this was announced much earlier....this must has been part of the offer document for the SUN TV IPO and the analyst who was interviewed reveal the same to the outside world.

Now, does this connect with free tv distribution ? - make all people buy their channel, even those, who can't afford a tv ? !!!!
