To Hell With Dell

Val Willis at Tom Peters Blog writes about an infuriating experience with Dell. The situation in this part of the world is no better. Dell has a plant in Penang and all the shipments have to come out this place. Since I forgot to order the mouse along with my laptop, I had to place a separate order for the mouse. It took about two days for the mouse to reach me.

  • We hear so much about Dell "deals". But sometimes they put stuff up for "deals" at a fraction of the cost, but don't really mention that these things are in backorder or they have to source it or you. So you end up waiting for stuff way longer than expected. I am still waiting, 2 weeks down the line for a Sony digital camera that was specially advertised as a "thursday deal" on Dell's website at almost a 60 percent discount! If I paid 30 bucks more (which is around 10 percent more), I'd have gotten it within a few days from Amazon!

  • kaps, dell seems to have good service,
    my frnds entire laptop got screwed, blew due to a power surge, and dell sevice picked it up from his doorstep and dropped it back.

    and they replaced everything except the exterior shell, all under warranty, so am not so sure if dell is tht bad

  • So far no problem with Dell. They replaced a faulty thumbdrive without asking a million question. Their helpdesk is good too.

  • @Anti,
    That's really bad. Haven't used the Dell online site before, hence don't know much about these deals.

    @Vatsan,
    Service and spares are slightly different issues, but they are closely related. My post was more about the spares.

    @Eshwar,
    You have a valid point. The point is that, most corporates have exclusive tie-ups with Dell for procuring PC's and laptop. In such a scenario, small difference in price doesn't matter. Corporate care more about the service and reliability.

    @Mitch,
    I wasn't aware that Dell had a product called Dell DJ.

    @Maran,
    That's sounds great.
