TN Assembly Results: The Action Begins

The results have already started trickling in. Initial trends indicate that the DMK alliance (DPA) may not win with a landslide as was projected in some of the exit polls. But it looks as if DMK has no option other than forming a coalition government. Bloggers can’t compete with the MSM in the election coverage. So head over to the following sites:

IBN Live

NDTV

Rediff

The Hindu

New Indian Express

I’ll post updates as and when possible.

Idly Vadai and Hot Machi Hot also have frequent updates. Do read their comments section as well.

Update: It is now clear that the DMK will now form a coalition government with the support of its allies. The interesting feature in these elections is the slender victory margins of both the DMK and the ADMK. One just feels that the entry of Vijayakanth’s DMDK might have just caused the difference. Another thing to note is the impressive performance by ADMK in Chennai. ADMK has managed to bag 7 seats in the city. Even some of DMK’s victories in Chennai are none too convincing. In Thousand Lights, M K Stalin has won by a margin of 2400 votes and in Harbour, K Anbazhagan won by a margin of just 400 votes.

The election commission’s website has comprehensive information about the various constituencies.

Mylapore: S Ve Shekher (ADMK) – 62,784 , Napoleon (DMK) – 61,127 , Santhanagopal Vasudev (Lok Paritran) – 9,436 , Rajan (DMDK) – 7,441.

The biggest loser in this election is Vaiko’s MDMK. With the DMK stepping up pressure on the Congress to remove MDMK from the alliance, Vaiko should decide soon about his next move.

Vijayakanth’s party has put up a decent performance securing almost 10% of the votes (higher in some cases) in most of the assembly constituencies. The only worry Vijayakanth would have is that the votes are so spread out that they have not got converted into Assembly seats.

The pundits didn’t have high hopes on Lok Paritran, but LP still managed to retain it's deposit in some of the constituencies.

As expected, CNN-IBN takes pride in the fact that their exit polls were bang on target. This goes on to prove that exit polls do come true sometimes.

Last but not the least, Kalanidhi Maran should be a happy man as the Sun TV stock witnessed some action today. This goes to prove that the market clearly sees Sun TV benefitting out of their proximity to the DMK-led government.

  • As of 9:05 this morning, the Sun TV had 140:50 split in favour of DMK.

Jaya TV, on the other hand, had 91:45 in favour of --- who else! -- the ADMK alliance!

The prominently displayed box with consolidated break-up between the alliances has just been taken off on Jaya TV.

    Long live partisan TV!

Of course, long live 'free colour TV', as well!

  • Now Urdu is going to be made a compulsory language in Muslim schools across Tamilnadu. Many of Urdu castes in reserved category already dont speak Tamil, but being treated like Tamils.

Here are some great DMK achievements for Tamil language in Tamilnadu:

1)Tamil removed from Chennai domestic airport.
2)Hindi rotten music brought (latest "pop" albums) in Tamilnadu FM stations.
3)Hindi DMK pamphlets distributed during elections.
    4)Karunanidhi reciting Hindi poems.
    Kanimozhi condemning Tamil poet Baaradhiyar.
    5)Plan to break Ramarpalam.
6)Launch of Isaiyaruvi channel where presenters dont even speak proper Tamil; they have beaten Sun Music in Thamingalam.
7)Allowing Hindi imposition in CBSE schools while Northerners skipping Tamil altogether.
No Tamil in even TN government transport and other website (see Karnataka/Kannada website for comparison)
8)Children's books in Tamil language have only English fruit/vegetable names written in Tamil and not Tamil words (again see Kannada books for children as comparison)
9)Broken promise of Tamil/bilingual engineering and adv course (no 1 reason of Tamil medium student suicides)
10)Use of Thamizh thaai vaazhthu with deleted and modified line and not original (note: High court case has been filed).

DMK is really greatest champion for Tamil language.
