K-Series Talk Shows

Just like Ekta Kapoor’s K series serials, we have another parallel K series going on. I’m referring to the K series talk shows by the likes of Karan Johar and Karan Thapar. Both of them come across as artificial. Karan Thapar also believes that putting on an arrogant tone might be an easy way to win over the audience. It doesn’t work everytime. If you get time, do watch Karan Thapar’s 25-minute interview with FM P Chidambaram on the reservation debate. During the interview, PC repeatedly pointed out that Karan Thapar was quibbling. Here’s a funny bit from the interview:

Karan Thapar: This is not a tax matter. This is an issue that affects the future of people in India.
P Chidambaram: Everything affects the people of India.

Karan Thapar: Its an issue that has been challenged. When the government is asked what’s the basis on which you have announced 27 per cent reservation in higher education for the OBCs. It’s an amazing thing to say the government will answer in due course. The government needs to give an answer today.
P Chidambaram: I am sorry the government does not have to answer you in an interview.

Karan Thapar: Its not me its the people of India.
P Chidambaram: Government will answer in the proper forum in Parliament in the Supreme Court not in an interview conducted by you.

Karan Thapar: But you can’t tell the people of India today.
P Chidambaram: I have told you about the material. Shall I say it in Tamil for a change?

Karan Thapar: No don’t say it in Tamil.

Update: Those interested in viewing the earlier BBC Hard Talk interview with Jayalalitha can access the BBC Archive here.

  • i remember his interview with jeyalalitha few years ago...J almost snubbed him on the face everytime he asked an arrogant question... that was a classic.

  • MHO - Indian politicians cannot stand criticism. It's a shame. I am looking at the media here and all the jokes and all the interviews..where reporters ask all kinds of questions..!!

I watched the J-Interview. Shame on her.!! I thought.

What's wrong in a reporter asking an arrogant question..and by they way..arrogance and politicians? Hmm..what are we talking about here.

Ashok..nothing against you my friend.!! Just about our stupid politicians.

  • J's last sentence was a classic. no one can deny that. can some one give the link for that interview if it ever exist.
going by what aruchamy said(ofcourse in the film Samy) everyone shud give respect to elected representatives no matter how criminal or idiot they are.

  • Karan Thapar has been doing a good job with these interviews. He has had questions which are piercing, relevant and backed by hard facts. Its a lesson for the Indian media

  • Its a shame that reporters like Karan thapar still ask questions this way. Its getting to point of irritating the hell out of you. No wrong in asking the tough and bold questions but lacking the basic etiquette of listening is just plain wrong and stupid.

I think P.Chithambaram handled it a lot better and gave a good shot back than Jayalalitha did. Did you notice that Karan thapar even got a lot of facts wrong in the interview ?

  • Hehe..Nice one. With interviewers like these Ekta Kapoor's oferrings seem positively brilliant.Karan Thapar is full of himself and deserves to be put down without much regard.

  • well I haven't watched the jayalalitha episode ... for I don't agree with anyone that he is stubborn, quibbles with words etc.

for one basic reason... he is the devil's advocate (if u r the angel)... he is there to oppose your views, to test their merit, to tell you all possible interpretations so that a coherent picture comes out in the end...
finally as Kapil sibbal had remarked on the issue of a muslim leader engaging in a scuffle with reporters in front of PM house.. "the job of media is to provoke, because otherwise they won't get accurate news"...that's precisely what he is doing...
on the other hand I think FM was not justified in saying that he can't say his views on TV since only a small section sees the interview..

I can go on and on... so that's why i blogged abt the interview... in a light diff from what's on here..!!

  • karan thinks his arrogance will get the same response he got from jj's interview..its definitely not happening with someone as patient as pc...it was very clear who the winner was in this interview as opposed to the jj interview...karan looked stupid and irritating...it is alrite to ask a tuff question but for gossakes plz listen to the reply!

  • If Karan was quibbling, PC was evasive at the best. I thought most of the questions were VERY relevant. As an audience I still don't have answers to those questions and I doubt If someone is ever going to come out with that. With a country like India, I don't think anybody would notice if the Government tweaks around the figures a bit - which could be expected if a polotical panel is going to do the survey.
