MK’s Weakness For Kannagi

Outlook spices up the news surrounding the re-installation of Kannagi State in Chennai:

On his 83rd birthday, Tamil Nadu CM M. Karunanidhi ensured that Kannagi's statue was back at the Marina Beach. In December 2001, then CM J. Jayalalitha cited bad vaastu and got it removed. Karunanidhi was heart-broken. In Tamil literature, Kannagi, the heroine of the Sangam-era epic Silappadikaram, is known as the icon of chastity. While Karunanidhi would have us believe that with the statue, Tamil self-respect has been restored, he's got another quite romantic reason. The model for the statue was Kalpana, a 1960s actress-socialite, whom Karunanidhi fancied. In 1968, the C.N. Annadurai government installed 40 statues, of which Karunanidhi inaugurated only Kannagi's. But it is more the model (Kalpana) than the symbol (Kannagi) that gave Karunanidhi solace.

  • This is blasphemy!

It was not inaugurated by MK. It was inaugurated by Ma.Po.Si (vajnanam).

  • Hmm..didn't know this twist. Thanks for the exposure -Outlook.

Will the Tamils whose self-respect has been restored..think about MK.S kalpana.

At the same time..it was stupid to remove a statue in the name of 'Vaasthu'!

  • Any man who has seen Kalpana in movies like Santhi Nilayam would know taht MK's feelings for Kannagi/Kalpana are understandable ...

  • I was just about to say that Kalpana in Santhi Nilayam was definitely fancieable when abi pipped me.

  • Wasn't it Kanchana who starred in Shanthi Nilayam?

  • @RaajK,
I also read that Ma Po Si was instrumental in installing the Kannagi statue. You are right about Kanchana. Kalpana didn't star in Santhi Nilayam.

  • need to check if dinamalar cinema correspondent has recently joined outlook :-)

Kalpana was a popular actor in Kannada in 60's. Sharapanjara by puttana kanagal is her best film to date. arty and all. She has not acted in tamil films. and this kalpana with Mu.Ka? highly unlikely.

  • Actually Karunanidhi wanted Vijayakumari to be the model for Kannagi statue

(She was the one who acted as Kannagi in the Film Poompuhar whose dialogues were penned by MK)

when MK came out with details about the statue's model rumours were spread at that time that
there was an affair going on between MK and Vijayakumari so only he selected her as the model.

so to avert it he made kalpana as the model for the statue.
This is the fact ..whatever outlook has reported is totally false..

  • RaajK,
Maalan's article claims that it was inaugurated by MK in Ma Po Si's presence.

  • Leaving aside Kalpana issue, MK's weakness for Kannagi is illustrative of how far the rationalist in MK has yielded to the politician/businessman in MK...

The Man who did not hesitate to call temple idols as worthless pieces of stone and metal, now idolises and worships that little known fictious Woman 2000 years ago (whose only fame was burning a city).... looks that MK is doing it more as a way to cook a snook at his unmarried and single(?) political rival JJ...

  • As anononymous said, MK wanted to have vijayakumari as model for kannagi. But Knowing the affair between them and the true character of Vijayakumari, MGR opposed this strongly .
