Rediffmail Vs Hoo Haa Mail

I happened to see a recent ad by Rediff promoting its lightning-speed email. It is quite obvious that Rediff is making fun of Yahoo in the ad. Email is generally considered instant and I don’t think people will switch over from Yahoo / Hotmail / Gmail to Rediffmail just because Rediff delivers it faster (by 5 / 10 seconds) than others. Maybe Rediff should have been in the express delivery / courier business and use this as a differentiating factor. The ad projects a situation where the Yahoo mail page takes ages to load. Yahoomail users would probably feel that this exaggeration by Rediff is unjustified.

Indian portals like Rediff and Indiatimes would be better off focusing on growing their content and e-business platforms rather than spending loads of money on TV campaigns for promoting their email services. It is better to let the biggies (Gmail / Hotmail / Yahoo) fight it out in the email wars.

  • I dont agree with you. There are a lot of people who log on the WWW for the first time. plus the number of Indians who are gonna log on for the first time over the next 5-10 years is going to be massive.

    rediff trying to lure these people into using rediffmail is perfectly acceptable. Plus this way rediff.com becomes a person's one stop source for everything! from sports- stocks- gossip-news- auctioning- email.

  • I guess a lot of folks have multiple email ids, and among them one will be an Indiatimes, Rediff or a Sify account. They definetely spruce up their service with some local flavour!

    But, it will be foolish for Rediff, etc to compete with Gmail,Hotmail, Yahoo.

  • I remain surprised that some continue to use rediffmail and sify mail when superior alternatives in Gmail,Yahoo Mail and Windows Live Mail are available. Storage space is not a differentiator anymore.

  • Rediffmail actually sucks. I tried using rediffmail after seeing the ad on tv and found out how useless it was. Rediffmail can never compete with yahoo/gmail/hotmail.
