RmKV's Irreversible Decision

The RmKV ad featuring Jyothika was the talk of the town especially in the run up to Jyothika's wedding with Surya. RmKV could not have thought of a better time for the launch of the much talked about reversible sari. Even TV channels took advantage of the developments and screened Surya's TVS Motor ad immediately after Jyothika's RmKV ad. Jyothika's wedding sari was a matter of intense debate and one of my favourite columnists devoted quite a bit of column space on this issue:

Last week I read an interesting piece of gossip when I visited Chennai. Jyotika, the famous Tamil film actress who is slated to marry another famous Tamil actor, Surya, went shopping for her wedding saris. And where did Jyotika, the celebrity endorser of the high-profile RmKV Silks, shop? If reports are to be believed, the celebrity shopped with an entourage for the wedding at (hold your breath) Tulsi Silks!

(Before writing this column, I once again checked this out with my niece who lives in Chennai who said that Jyotika had bought her wedding saris in RMKV too, as per a later report. This confused me but my niece didn't seem too worried as she was more concerned about her heartthrob Surya getting married!) But for me, at least, the damage was done.

I don't know whether the guys at RmKV read Ramanujam Sridhar's column but they have decided to withdraw the campaign featuring Jyothika. This should go down as one of the most successful ad campaigns in recent history. Jo fans would probably need to wait for some more time to see whether she resurfaces in the ad circuit. For all you know, Jyothika might follow Simran's footsteps and might start accepting silly ads like Udhayam Paruppu.

  • hey hey SIMRAN was once the HEARTHROB OF TAMILNADU! she was the queen (for me..she's still the queen) it's just that she wants to be in the media and accepts like udhayam paruppa ads! Didn't we go drooling and crazy abt JOTHIKA when joe poured half a litre of oil over the idly for "IDAYAM" oil ad? duh...

  • @Eshwar,
You never know. Surya and Jo can appear in the ad as one happy couple.

    @Tamilmagani,
How can we forget the Idhayam Oil ad. Even Vivek made fun of it in some movie.

  • Withdrawing the campaign surely must signify that she did indeed buy her sarees from elsewhere. Although it all seems a bit childish to me!

  • //Surya and Jo can appear in the ad as one happy couple.//

Eventhough I am accepting this, Sivakumar, the father of surya will not allow this. I heard he raised so many restrictions to jO before marriage including starring in movies

  • I was way to depressed to read from the Sify link that 72% of respondednts in a national TV poll said that they wouldn't accept a married woman as heroine.

It is so disconcerting to realize that India is so awfully backward in liberal thought and our patriarchal instincts run as high as ever.

Women should revolt in Anger. If Surya had any conscience, he too should quit actingand do something else.

  • Simran atleast looks ok in the Udhaiyam Paruppu Ad...but you should see her in a baby soap/oil ad...She looks aweful...her face/makeup is totally screwed up!

    first time here...

There's another actress called Tamanna(She used to be featured in the RMKv Ad where they show 'bride' of these days - the bride shaking hands with her father-in-law after her wedding). The same chic comes in Saravana Saree and Jewellers Ad...

    Adslai ellaam idhu sagachamappa :)

  • This is not the first or only time that Models endorsing a product/brand dont prefer to use/purchase that product/brand themselves.

Sachin Tendulkar modelled for TVS Victor, but he is said to have never driven a 2 wheeler in his life.... I am absolutely certain that many of our Hindi Film Actresses modelling for soap brands like Lux or Lyril would be using imported high end bathing soaps only.

It is only a matter of time before people realise that celebrity advertising overkill can be a liability to a product/brand.
